Wellesley Tennis Dominates in 9-0 Sweep of Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Wellesley College posted straight set wins at all six singles positions, and surrendered just two doubles games, en route to a 9-0 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Saturday.

The win improves Wellesley to 2-0, with a 1-0 mark against NEWMAC opponents. Smith starts its season 0-1, 0-1 in the NEWMAC. 

Wellesley set the tone early in the match, surrendering just two doubles points in three matches. At one, junior Sojung Lee and first-year Carina Chen blanked the Smith tandem of Tessy Lopez and Andrea Tanco, 8-0, while at two, first-years Andjela Stojkovic and Lina Ye posted an 8-2 win over Margaret Anne Smith and Kelli Cheung. Wrapping up doubles action, senior Kendall Tada and first-year Dasha Kostikina paired up for a dominating 8-0 win over Alexandra Steck and Hana Foe.

The Blue were equally as impressive in singles play, combining to allow Smith just five total games in six matches. At one, Lee was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Cheung, while at two Chen blanked Seema Samawi, 6-0, 6-0. At three, Ye picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ruth Yi, while at four, Stojkovic was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Margaret Anne Smith. Completing the singles ladder, Samantha Stone defeated Kathryn Dernback, 6-0, 6-0, and Caroline Dickensheets was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Tanco. 

Smith will next be in action on September 20, hosting Babson College in a NEWMAC matchup that begins at 1 p.m.  Wellesley will next host MIT on September 14, beginning at 1 p.m.
