#22 MIT Edges Wellesley Tennis, 6-3

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- In a battle of the NEWMAC finalists from each of the past two seasons, it was #22 MIT that topped Wellesley, as the nationally-ranked Engineers came away with a 6-3 win in women's tennis action on Saturday. 

MIT now moves to 2-0 on the season (2-0 in NEWMAC play), while Wellesley stands at 2-1 (1-1 NEWMAC).

The visitors grabbed a 2-1 edge after doubles play, winning in the second and third flights. At three, MIT's Michelle Dutt and Krystal Lai topped Kendall Tada and Samantha Stone, 8-3, while at two MIT's Elysa Kohrs and Victoria Tam defeated Lina Ye and Andjela Stojkovic, 8-3. The final doubles match on the court was at one, where Wellesley's Sojung Lee and Carina Chen came away with a 9-7 win over Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu. 

MIT went up 4-1 early in singles, with wins at five and one. At five, Wendi Kong was a 6-1, 6-3, winner over Tada, while at one, Quisenberry topped Lee, 6-3, 6-3.

Wellesley cut the lead to 4-2 as Stojkovic defeated Lai, 6-4, 6-0 in the third spot, but MIT was able to grab the fifth and deciding point with a win at four singles. Tam was the clinching point, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ye.

The teams then split the final two matches on court, to end the contest 6-3 in favor of MIT. At two, the Engineers' Kohrs won a three-set match against Chen, with scores of 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, while at six, Wellesley's Stone came back to defeat Dutt, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Wellesley returns to NEWMAC action on Wednesday, hosting Mount Holyoke at 5:00pm. MIT will be back on the courts tomorrow, hosting Springfield in a 1:00pm NEWMAC match.
