Wellesley Tennis Snaps Wheaton's Winning Streak

NORTON, Mass. – The Wellesley College women's tennis team handed Wheaton College its first loss in the Lyons 2013-14 campaign on Tuesday night at Clark Tennis Courts by a 6-3 score in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

Wellesley opened with a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles play, and then took three of six singles matches to earn the 6-3 win. 

At one doubles, Wellesley junior Sojung Lee and first-year Carina Chen avenged an ITA loss to the Wheaton pair of Alexandra Marlowe and Lyndsay Cooke. Lee and Chen came back from an early deficit to pick up an 8-6 win.

At second doubles, Andjela Stojkovic and Lina Ye paired up for an 8-3 win over Wheaton's Morgan Bell and Amanda Brazell. Wrapping up the doubles ladder, Wellesley's third pairing of senior Kendall Tada and first-year Samantha Stone topped Wheaton's Izzy Gorham and Jessica Moore, 8-3.

In singles play, Wellesley's Stojkovic, Stone and Tada finished the night as double-winners, registering victories at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. At three, Stojkovic topped Bell, 7-5, 7-6 (4-0), while at five, Stone defeated Sarah Crom, 6-2, 6-1. Wrapping up Wellesley's team points, Tada's sixth position match saw her top Caroline DiNicola, 6-1, 6-0.

Wheaton claimed their points at No. 1, No. 2, and No.  4, as Marlowe, Cooke and Brazell kept their perfect NEWMAC records intact. Marlowe turned in a 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 triumph over Wellesley's Lee at No.1, while Cooke bested the Blue's Chen by a 7-5, 6-0 score at No.2. Brazell also notched a come-from-behind win against Ye at No.4 singles bouncing back from a 2-6 deficit in set one with scores of 6-1 and 12-10.

Wheaton (6-1, 4-1 NEWMAC) hosts MIT on Saturday, October 5 at the Clark Tennis Courts beginning at 1 p.m. Wellesley (5-2, 4-1 NEWMAC) travels to Babson College on Saturday for an 11 a.m. start time. Both matches are NEWMAC contests this coming Saturday.
