Wellesley Tennis Hangs Tough in 5-4 Loss to #14 Trinity

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College tennis team opened the 2014 Nor'Easter Bowl with a tight 5-4 loss to #14 Trinity. The second-seeded Bantams improve to 7-1 with the win, while the Blue, seeded seventh in the tournament, move to 9-7 overall.

Wellesley had the advantage after doubles, sweeping all three matches to go up 3-0. Trinity, however, stormed back to win five of six singles matches, earning the victory.

At one doubles, Blue junior Sojung Lee and first-year Carina Chen picked up an 8-6 win over Melita Ferjanic and Morgan Feldman of Trinity. At two, Wellesley first-years Andjela Stojkovic and Lina Ye outlasted Trinity's Senzo Mavune-Maphisa and Alexandra Criss, 9-8 (7-2). Wrapping up the doubles action, Wellesley senior Kendall Tada and first-year Samantha Stone picked up a 9-7 win over Trinity's Elizabeth Gerber and Caroline Gagne.

In singles, five of the six matches went into a third set. At one, Trinity's Ferjanic topped Wellesley's Lee, 6-1, 2-6, 6-0, while at two, the Bantams Feldman defeated Chen, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. At three, Trinity's Mavune-Maphia was a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 winner over Stojkovic, while at four Wellesley picked up a point as Ye topped Gerber, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. At five Gagne was a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 winner over Wellesley's Tada, while at six, Trinity's Taylor Wilkins topped Wellesley's Dasha Kostikina, 6-1, 7-6. 

Wellesley will now play sixth-seeded Bates tomorrow, hosting the Bobcats at 2:00pm.


Other Nor'Easter Bowl Action:
#1 Amherst def. #8 Babson, 8-0 - Box Score - Top-seeded and defending Champion, Amherst, cruised to an 8-0 win over Babson. Amherst allowed just two points against them in a doubles sweep and then took five of the six singles matches for the win.
