Blue Tennis Earns National Ranking; Lee/Chen Ranked Regionally

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College tennis team returned to the national rankings in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national poll. In addition to the national mention, Wellesley junior Sojung Lee and first-year Carina Chen claimed individual Northeast regional rankings.

Wellesley picked up a #28 national ranking in the April poll, after finishing the fall as the #30 team in the nation. The Blue are also ranked 10th in the Northeast, the strongest of the four regions in NCAA Division III tennis.

Individually, Lee jumped from an #18 singles ranking in the fall to be ranked ninth overall in the current poll. The junior has an overall record of 13-6 in singles, and has won six of her last seven matches. During that stretch, Lee has also recorded three of those wins against the number-one player on nationally-ranked teams.

As a doubles team, Lee and Chen are ranked sixth in the region. The duo has a 14-4 overall record, winning their last three matches, two coming against other regionally-ranked doubles teams.

The Blue recently wrapped up its spring dual meet schedule with a win at the 2014 Seven Sisters Championships. Wellesley went 4-0 at the event, topping #29 Vassar in the finals. Earlier this spring, the Blue hung tough against nationally-ranked foes at their own Nor'Easter Bowl. Wellesley nabbed a win over then #29 Bates, and had tight 5-4 losses to current #15 Trinity and #22 Brandeis.

This past fall, the Blue finished the fall season as NEWMAC Runner-Up. Wellesley went 7-1 in conference play, and advanced to the finals of the conference tournament, before falling to #13 MIT in a hard-fought match. Individually, six of Wellesley's players earned NEWMAC All-Conference recognition.
