#13 MIT Defeats #28 Wellesley Tennis

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The #13 MIT tennis team used a singles sweep to post an 8-1 victory over #28 Wellesley in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The win keeps MIT unbeaten at 2-0 (2-0 NEWMAC), while the Blue fall to 2-2 (1-1 NEWMAC).

The teams split the first two flights in doubles with MIT winning at one and Wellesley winning at two. The MIT duo of Elysa Kohrs and Victoria Tam picked up an 8-3 win over Wellesley senior Sojung Lee and sophomore Carina Chen at one, while at two, the Blue bounced back with a win from sophomore Andjela Stojkovic and first-year Caroline Hsu. The Engineers then grabbed the third doubles win, as Krystal Lai and Rena Liu topped Wellesley sophomore Samantha Stone and first-year Emily Olson, giving MIT a slim 2-1 lead heading into singles.

In singles play MIT shut the Blue out, taking all six matches to wrap up the 8-1 win. Cindy Liu picked up the first point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Stone at five. Wendi Kong then scored a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Hsu at four to put MIT one point away from clinching the match. Sonya Das then put it in the win column for the Engineers with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Chen at three.

Wellesley pushed two of the singles matches to three sets before falling. At two, Stojkovic battled back against Tam to take the second set before eventually falling by a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 score. In the number six match it was a similar result, with Lai prevailing over Olson by a 6-1, 2-6, 15-13 score. Kohrs captured the number one match for the Engineers with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lee.

MIT will play again tomorrow in the NEWMAC, traveling to Springfield College for a 1:00 p.m. match. Wellesley will also play a conference match tomorrow, taking on Mount Holyoke College on the road at 11:00 a.m.
