Wellesley Tennis Tops Clark in NEWMAC Clash

WORCESTER, Mass. — The #28 Wellesley College tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over Clark University on the road on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Blue to 4-2 overall, 3-1 in the NEWMAC. Clark dips to 2-5 overall, 0-2 in the conference.

Wellesley got off to a fast start, sweeping the doubles competition in dominating fashion for an early 3-0 lead. The Blue dropped just one point between the three matches in the doubles sweep.

At one, senior Sojung Lee and sophomore Carina Chen blanked Isabelle Long and Stephanie Gallant, 8-0, while at two, sophomore Andjela Stojkovic and first-year Caroline Hsu defeated Kera Snyder and Misa Mai,  8-1. At three, first-year Emily Olson and sophomore Dasha Kostikina swept past Fiorella Hernandez and Sarah Clay, 8-0.

The Blue then won five out of the six singles matches to wrap up the 8-1 victory. In the two through six singles flights, Wellesley surrendered just one point, topping each opponent in straight sets.

At two, Stojkovic defeated Snyder, 6-0, 6-1, while at three, Hsu won 6-0, 6-0 over Gallant. Sophomores Samantha Stone and Caroline Dickensheets also recorded 6-0, 6-0 wins, with Stone defeating Clay at four and Dickensheets topping Mai at five. Wrapping up the singles ladder, Victoria Wu was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Hernandez.

Clark got its lone point of the match at number one singles, as Long topped Wellesley's Lee in a three-setter, 1-6, 6-2, 11-9.

Wellesley is back in action at the 2014 ITA Regional Championships next weekend at Williams College. Clark next plays on Tuesday, hosting Springfield in a 5:00pm NEWMAC match.
