Wellesley Tennis Cruises on Day One of Seven Sisters
NORTHAMPTON, Ma. -- The Wellesley College tennis team won a pair of matches to open the 2015 Seven Sisters Championship with a perfect slate. The Blue swept both Bryn Mawr and Mount Holyoke at the two-day event, which is being hosted by Smith College.
The Blue improve to 12-5 overall with the wins. Wellesley will head into day two action tied with Vassar, who also nabbed a 2-0 start to the tournament.
Against Bryn Mawr, Wellesley got off to a good start, winning each match in straight sets for a 5-0 sweep. At one doubles, sophomores Dasha Kostikina and Samantha Stone won their match handedly, topping Melina Koukoutchos, 6-1, 6-3. At second doubles, Blue sophomore Caroline Dickensheets and first-year Caroline Hsu picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tirsa Delate and Eram Haider.
In singles, the Blue cruised at all three flights to seal the team win. At one, sophomore Carina Chen posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lizzie Siegle, while at two, first-year Emily Olson topped Molly MacDougall, 6-1, 6-0. Rounding out the singles action, first-year Victoria Wu was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Jennifer Laske.
Wellesley was equally as impressive against Mount Holyoke, also earning a sweep. In doubles, Wellesley's Kostikina and Stone paired up for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Alexa Colas at one, and Dickensheets and Hsu teamed up for a 6-0, 6-0, win over Michelle Cai and Mira Murali at two.
In singles, Lee defeated her opponent, 6-4, 6-0, at one, while at two, Chen outlasted Sarah Anischik with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win. At three, Olson took home a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ishita Tibrewal.
Seven Sisters action continues tomorrow, with the Blue taking on host Smith College at noon. Wellesley will then play Vassar at 3:00pm for what could be the title match.
