Wellesley Tennis Opens NEWMAC Play With 7-2 Win at Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis posted a 7-2 win over Smith College on Saturday, opening the 2015 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season with a victory. The win lifts the Blue to 2-0 (1-0 NEWMAC), while the Pioneers drop to 1-1 (0-1 NEWMAC).

All three Wellesley doubles pairs scored victories, as the #1 Doubles duo of sophomore Emily Olson (La Jolla, Calif.) and first year Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) defeated Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J.) and Noa Dublin (Southampton, N.Y.) of Smith, 8-0.  At #2 Doubles, junior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and first year Rosanne Hu (Troy, Texas) eased to an 8-1 win over Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn.) and Janan Fugel (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), while the Blue's #3 Doubles pairing of Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, B.C., Canada) and Tristan Lorich (New York, N.Y.) also swept to an 8-0 win.

In singles, Wellesley earned several decisive wins, as Lorich defeated Peikes, 6-1, 6-3, at #2, while first year So Jin Ki (Seoul, South Korea) defeated Fugel, 6-0, 6-0, at #4. 

The Blue also scored victories in the #5 and #6 singles matches, as junior Caroline Dickensheets (Alpharetta, Ga.) defeated Joanna Kim (Chicago, Ill.), 6-1, 6-3, and sophomore Victoria Wu (Guangdong, China) defeated Morgan Barney (North Attleboro, Mass.), 6-2, 6-1.

The Pioneers scored victories in the top singles matchup as well as the #3 match, as Dubin won 6-4, 6-4 over Wellesley sophomore Caroline Hsu (Boca Raton, Fla.) at #1 and Hu fell to Smith in the only three-set match of the day, 7-5, 3-6, 5-10 at #3

Wellesley will continue NEWMAC play next weekend when they welcome MIT at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 12.  Smith is back in action on Sunday, September 13, playing host to Babson in another NEWMAC clash.
