Huang Advances to Round of 16 as Blue Tennis Opens ITA Regionals

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – First year Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) won a pair of matches to advance to the round of 16 in the singles bracket at the 2015 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships on Friday at Middlebury College.

Huang was one of three Wellesley player competing in the singles bracket, along with juniors Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) and Carina Chen (Hong Kong).

The Blue first year opened the day with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over first year Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) of Gordon College in the round of 64. She then went on to rally from a one set deficit to defeat first year Vanya Babunski (Belgrade, Serbia) of Trinity College (Conn.). After Babunski opened with a 6-4 win in the opening set, Huang countered with a 6-3 win in the second before outlasting Babunski 7-5 in the third set.

Stojkovic advanced one round on the day, defeating sophomore Shannon Gibbs (West Des Moines, Iowa) of host Middlebury, with a resounding 10-0 win in the third set tiebreak after splitting the opening sets, 3-6, 6-3. Stojkovic's run came to an end in the round of 32, as Bowdoin senior Tiffany Cheng (Laguna Hills, Calif.) swept to a 6-0, 6-0 win. 

Chen saw her day end abruptly in the opening round, as she fell 6-0, 6-0 to first year Mina Karamercan (Istanbul, Turkey) of Tufts.

In the doubles draw, the duo of Huang and sophomore Emily Olson (La Jolla, Calif.) and the team of Stojkovich and first year Tristian Lorich (New York, N.Y.) each lost in the first round. Huang and Olson fell 8-3 to Sadie Shackleford (Sewanee, Tenn.) and Catherin Miller (Indianapolis, Ind.) of Middlebury, while Stojkovic and Lorich dropped an 8-1 decision to Pilar Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and Sarah Shadowens (Grand Rapids, Mich.) of Bowdoin.

Huang will continue singles play tomorrow in the round of 16, taking on seeded junior Lily Bondy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) of host Middlebury. The consolation singles matches will be announced on Saturday morning.
