Blue Tennis Opens Nor'easter Bowl with 5-4 Win Over St. Lawrence

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis opened play in the 5th Annual Nor'easter Bowl women's tennis tournament on Friday afternoon at Wellesley, defeating visiting Saint Lawrence University, 5-4. Wellesley improves to 10-5 on the season, while the Saints are now 6-4 overall. 

In other tournament action, co-host Brandeis defeated visiting Christopher Newport, 7-2, while Rensselaer topped Stonehill, 6-3. In the late match at the Longfellow Club in Wayland, Mass., Amherst defeated Babson, 9-0.

The Blue rallied from a 2-1 deficit following doubles, as St. Lawrence's Alexandra Dadoly (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) and Emily Wyman (Naples, Fla.) earned an 8-6 victory over Wellesley's Emily Olson (La Jolla, Calif.) and Tristan Lorich (New York, N.Y.) at #2 Doubles and the Saints' Lia Petersen (Bridgehampton, N.Y.) and Hallie Young (Foxborough, Mass.) defeated Dasha Kostikina (Acton, Mass.) and Samantha Stone (Greenwich, Conn.) at #3 Doubles to give the visitors the early edge.

Wellesley's lone doubles victory came at #1 Doubles, where Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) cruised to an 8-2 win over Georgia Comber (Vancouver, B.C.) and Morgan McNeal (Beaufort, S.C.).

Chen would go on to clinch the match for Wellesley in singles play, taking a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wyman at #1 Singles. Chen's win followed Wellesley wins at #6, #3 and #2 Singles thanks to the efforts of Stone (6-3, 6-4 over Carly Jefferson (Sunapee, N.H.)), Olson (6-3, 6-0 over Young) and Huang (6-2, 6-1 versus McNeal).

The Saints earned a pair of wins in singles play, as Comber took a victory when Lorich retired at #4 Singles and Dadoly defeated Kostikina, 7-6 (5), 6-0, at #5 Singles.

Nor'easter Bowl action continues tomorrow at 9:30 AM with Wellesley hosting Christopher Newport. Stonehill and St. Lawrence will match-up in the day's second match at Wellesley, beginning at 3:00 PM. In other action, Amherst will play at Brandeis and Babson and Rensselaer will play at the Boston Sports Club in Wellesley at 5:45 PM.
