Blue Tennis Takes Down Wheaton In NEWMAC Play, 7-2

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis used a 3-0 sweep in doubles and 4-2 win in singles to earn a 7-2 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over visiting Wheaton College on Tuesday evening at the Wellesley Tennis Courts.

The Blue are now 6-1 overall and 4-1 in conference matches following their third home victory of the fall. Wheaton drops to 3-2 overall and in NEWMAC play.

Blue seniors Caroline Dickensheets (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Dasha Kostikina (Acton, Mass.) opened the match with an 8-2 win over Wheaton junior Arielle Klopsis (West Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore Connor O'Keefe (Lutz, Fla.) at No. 3 doubles. Wellesley followed with another 8-2 victory, this time at No. 2 doubles, when sophomore Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas) and first year Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) defeated junior Jodi Katz (Needham, Mass.) and first year Harley Swainston (Hudsonville, Mich.). Wellesley closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-5 triumph at No. 1, as senior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) and first year Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.) topped sophomore Ines de Bracamonte (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.) and first year Isabelle Garvanne (Los Angeles, Calif.). 

Leading 3-0 after doubles, the Blue secured the match victory with victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. First year Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Swainston at No. 5, while sophomore Sojin Ki (Seoul, South Korea) clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Klopsis at No. 6. 

Stojkovic and Yan extended the Wellesley advantage to 7-0 before the visitors won a pair of matches. Stojkovic took down Katz, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3, while Yan earned matching 6-1 set wins to defeat Garvanne at No. 2.

Wheaton's victories came at No. 4 and No. 1 singles. At No. 4, O'Keefe used a 10-8 win in a third set superbreaker to top Peng after splitting the first two sets, 2-6, 6-4. At No. 1, de Bracamonte also needed three sets after dropping her opening set to Wellesley senior Carina Chen (Hong Kong), but she ultimately came away with a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-4, win. 

Both teams continue the NEWMAC season on Saturday, October 1, at 11:00 AM. Wellesley will host cross-town rival Babson, while Wheaton will travel to MIT.
