COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Wellesley College tennis dropped a 6-3 final to Division II Concordia University Irvine on Wednesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center in the opening match of their spring schedule and 2017 team training trip to Southern California. The Blue are now 10-3 overall in 2016-17, while Concordia improves to 10-7 on the year.

Wellesley earned wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 5 and No. 6 singles in a closely contested match. At No. 2 doubles, the duo of New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.) and senior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) picked-up right where they left off after an undefeated fall season with an 8-6 win over Anastasiia Kuprina and Kathrine Jensen. The Blue just missed taking a 2-1 lead after doubles, as instead it was the Eagles that got the upperhand heading into singles with a 9-8 (3) victory by Luma Schwab and Ghada Al-ajeely over senior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and sophomore Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.).

In singles, Concordia swept the top four spots in the lineup to lock up the victory. The Blue got wins in the bottom two pairings thanks to first year Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and sophomore Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.). Both needed three sets to grab the wins, as Peng defeated Kathrine Jensen 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, and Ki topped Ashley Glick 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The Blue also dropped two tightly contested matches at No. 1, where Chen lost in three sets to Kuprina, and No. 3 where Al-Ajeely defeated Stojkovic, also in three sets.

Wellesley will now look to Friday, March 31, and a matchup with Cal Lutheran at 6:00 PM ET and 3:00 PM local time. Concordia will host Hawaii Hilo on Friday at 10:00 AM.
