Wellesley Tennis Takes 8-1 Victory Over Occidental (Calif.)

LAS ANGELES, Calif.-- Wellesley College tennis defeated Occidental in an 8-1 victory on Saturday evening at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center to earn their second win of their spring break trip. Wellesley improves to 6-4 on their season, while Occidental drops to 2-5 overall.

The teams competed in two doubles matches and also took a victory by default. Sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and junior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) held an 8-5 advantage over senior Samantha Farrell (Oakland, CA) and junior Andrea Clawson (Bellingham, WA). First years Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio) and Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) took an 8-2 victory over junior Nicole Pelletier (Farmingdale, ME) and senior Lauren Hutkin (San Luis Obispo, CA) to complete the doubles competition with Wellesley leading 3-0.

Sophomore Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.), first years Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.), and Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) all earned victories in singles competition for the Blue. Hernandez defeated Clawson,6-0 and 6-1. Buyer also took home a 6-0 and 6-1 victory over Pelletier. Schleichkorn also contributed to the win, taking her sets 6-0 and 6-1. Occidental's lone victory of the match came from senior Samantha Farrell (Oakland, CA) as she battled with Peng in a three set match. Farrell took the first set with a score of 6-4 but Peng came back to take the second set, 6-3. With their match tied, Farrell took a 10-4 third set victory for Occidental in their only win of the day. Wellesley was defaulted two victories on the match to help them secure the 8-1 victory.

Occidental will return to action on Sunday, March 25 as they host Willamette University. Wellesley will play again on Monday, March 26 at Pomona, Calif. against Lewis & Clark at 2:00 PM.
