Wellesley Tennis Powers Past Whittier, 8-1, to Extend Win Streak to Five

WHITTIER, Calif.-- Wellesley College tennis powered past Whittier College, 8-1, to extend their season-best win streak to 5-0 on Tuesday night at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts. The Blue improve to 8-4 overall, while Whittier drops to 2-7 on their season.

The Blue swept through doubles competition to open the match with a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) and first year Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) took the first win of the day when they defeated first year Kiara Embrey (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Karissa Lee (Whittier, Calif.), 8-1.

Sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and junior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) took the next match, 8-2, over junior Kindall Yeung (Fullerton, Calif.) and sophomore Amanda Rodriguez (Glendora, Calif.) at No. 1. To complete the doubles sweep, first years Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio) and Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) defeated sophomore Madeline Schmidt-Perez (San Marino, Calif.) and first year Kallysta Lopez (Whittier, Calif.) in an 8-4 victory.

In singles competition, Wellesley had five players earn victories to secure the 8-1 win. Hernandez kicked off singles action as she took both of her sets to 6-0 over Embrey. Huang took the next victory in the No. 1 spot when she defeated Yeung, 6-1 and 6-2. The third singles win came from Schleichkorn at No. 6 as she won both sets 6-1 and 6-2 over Lee. Wellesley junior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) earned her first win of the day when she defeated Lopez in two, 6-4 sets. Wellesley first year Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.) took her match to three sets with Schmidt-Perez. Buyer dropped the first set 6-3 but came back to take a 7-6 victory to force a third set where she came out on top, 11-9.

Whittier's lone victory of the match came at No. 2 when Rodriguez defeated Kong in three sets. Rodriguez started with a 6-1 defeat over Kong in the first set but Kong fought back to earn a 6-3 win to force a tiebreaker. The third set finished with a score of 11-9 as Rodriguez took the victory for Whittier.

Wellesley will looks to extend their win streak to six when they take on Cerritos College in last game of their spring break trip on Thursday, March 29 at 5:00 PM. Whittier will play again on Wednesday, March 28 at 5:00 PM when they host Willamette.
