Wellesley Tennis Falls Short Against Babson, 6-3 in First Conference Setback

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis dropped their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match of the season in a 6-3 setback against Babson College on Tuesday evening at the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. Wellesley is now 10-6 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC. Babson improves to 9-2 on their season and 5-0 in conference play.

Babson took a 2-1 lead over the Blue in doubles action. Babson first year Carolina Merz (Santa Tecla, El Savador) and senior Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii) took in a win with an 8-4 set over sophomore Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) and first year Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.). Babson senior Claire Foster (Orange, Conn.) and sophomore Emily Roeper (Belle Mead, N.J.) took their set to a 8-4 finish to earn the second win for Babson over first year Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and classmate Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio).

Junior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) brought in the lone victory for the Blue in doubles, defeating first year Alexa Tutecky (North York, Ontario) and senior Jenny Quenard (St.-Legier, Switzerland) in a 8-6 set.

In singles action, Tutecky earned a win over Huang in the No. 1 spot in two sets. Huang and Tutecky battled out in the first set in a tiebreaker ending at 7-6 (6). Tutecky completed her victory in the next set with a score of 6-2 over Huang. Merz defeated Peng with her sets ending at 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot. Kong took in a victory for Wellesley over first year Marissa Madison (Columbus, Ohio) at No 3. with sets finishing at 6-1, 6-4. Foster earned the advantage in the match for Babson when she defeated Hernandez, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4.

Kam earned a victory over Wellesley junior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) in three sets. Ki defeated Kam in the first set, 4-6, but Kam took the next set, 6-2, to force a third set that ended at 11-9 in favor of Kam. Chu defeated Roeper in a three set match for the Blue at No. 6. Chu rallied from a 6-2 setback in the first set, to go on and defeat Roeper in the final two sets with scores of 6-2, 10-3.

Wellesley returns to action on Saturday April 14 at 12:00 PM when they continue NEWMAC play at Springfield. Babson will also play on Saturday at 2:00 PM at Clark.
