MIT Sweeps Past Wellesley In NEWMAC Tennis Action

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley College dropped a 9-0 decision to host MIT in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday evening at the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble. MIT improves to 6-0 in conference and 12-1 overall while the Blue slide to 4-2 in the NEWMAC and 11-7 overall. 

The Engineers, No. 13 in the latest ITA National Poll, swept past the No. 33 ranked Blue in doubles play before going on to take all six singles matches in six sets. Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) and Marina Zhang (Garnet Valley, Pa.) defeated Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan), 8-2, at No. 1. Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.) and Dora Tzeng (Fremont, Calif.) downed Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) and Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) 8-2, at No. 2, and Kelly Zhu (Pearland, Texas) and Lara Rakocevic (Portland, Ore.) topped Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio), 8-3, to conclude doubles play. 

The Engineers continued to roll in singles action, with Rakocevic defeating Hernandez, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 and Tzeng defeating Kong, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 to clinch the match. After clinching, MIT went on to finish the sweep as Zhu defeated Peng 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Kohrs took the No. 1 singles match, 6-3, 6-1, over Huang. Zhang then defeated Wellesley junior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.), 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 before Megan Guenther (Willowbrook, Ill.) topped Chu, 6-2, 6-2, to end the match. 

Wellesley hits the road for the final time in the regular season on Saturday, April 21 to take on Mount Holyoke at 12:00 PM. MIT will travel to Springfield for a 10:30 AM match on Saturday.
