Wellesley Tennis Earns 6-3 NEWMAC Victory Over Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.-- Wellesley tennis earned a 6-3 victory over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Mount Holyoke College Tennis Courts. Wellesley improves to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in the NEWMAC while Mount Holyoke drops to 7-10 on their season and 4-3 in conference.

Wellesley took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. First years Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio) and Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) earned the first point for the Blue in a 8-1 victory over juniors Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M.) and Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore.) at No. 3.

Mount Holyoke brought in their first point when sophomore Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.) and first year Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.) defeated sophomore Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) and first year Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) in a 8-3 set at No. 2. Wellesley junior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) battled to a 9-7 victory against sophomore Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan) and senior Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India) at No. 1 to give Wellesley a 2-1 advantage going into singles play.

Huang, Hernandez, Chu, and junior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) all earned victories for Wellesley in singles competition. Ki defeated Rosen at No. 5 in her two sets at 6-0, 6-1. Hernandez brought in a win for the Blue with her 6-3, 6-4, sets over Gerasimova. Playing at No.6, Chu edged junior Clara Wang (Madison, Conn.) in her sets going to 6-2, 6-1.

Huang earned a big victory for Wellesley as she battled against Ching-Ching Huang. Huang took the first set, 6-3 but Ching-Ching Huang battled back to earn a win in the second set, 6-1 to force a tie breaker. Huang earned a 1-0 (10-8) victory for Wellesley.

Mount Holyoke earned two victories in singles action when Peabody defeated Kong in sets going to 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3. The last point for Mount Holyoke was brought in by Tibrewal over Peng. Peng won the first set 6-2 but Tibrewal came back in the next set, 6-4 to force a tiebreaker. Tibrewal battled to a 1-0 (10-4) win in the tiebreaker over Peng.

Both teams will finish regular season play on Tuesday, April 24 at 4:30 PM. Wellesley will host Emerson and Mount Holyoke will travel to Smith.
