Wellesley Tennis Caps Regular Season with 9-0 Win Over Emerson

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis swept past visiting Emerson College, 9-0, to close out the 2018 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season on Tuesday afternoon at the Wellesley College tennis courts. Wellesley ends the regular season with a 13-7 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the NEWMAC. Emerson is now 6-12 overall (2-6 NEWMAC).

The Blue, ranked No. 33 in the latest ITA Division III National Poll, have earned the No. 3 spot in the conference tournament and will host No. 6 Springfield in a quarterfinal match when the NEWMAC Championship opens on Saturday, April 28. 

Wellesley opened the match by sweeping doubles play, with junior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) moving to 13-3 on the season thanks to an 8-2 win over sophomores Alisha Parikh (Los Altos, Calif.) and Rachel Scalera at No. 1. First years Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio) also earned an 8-1 win over sophomore Sabrina Jacobs (Demarest, N.J.) and first year Meredith Stisser (Manchester, N.H.) at No. 2, while junior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) and Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.) defeated first year Cassia Burns (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Jolin Cheng, 8-2, at No. 3.

Huang moved her record at No. 1 singles to 14-4 on the season with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Jacobs. Peng, Chu, and sophomore Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) each picked up 6-0, 6-0 sweeps to help the Blue secure the win. Peng defeated Scalera at No. 2, Hernandez topped Stisser at No. 4, and Chu bested Burns in the No. 6 match. Wins by Kong, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3, and Ki, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 closed out the 9-0 Wellesley victory.

Saturday's match between the Blue and the Pride will take place at 12:00 PM.
