Wellesley Tennis Sweeps Past Springfield, Advances To NEWMAC Semis

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Third-seeded Wellesley College tennis took control of the match in doubles, before clinching the victory with wins in the No. 6 and No. 4 singles matches, to defeat sixth-seeded Springfield College, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2018 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Wellesley Outdoor Courts.

With the win, Wellesley advances to take on No. 2 Babson College in the NEWMAC Semifinals on Tuesday, May 1 at 3:30 PM in Babson Park.

Junior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and sophomore Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) opened the day with an 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles, defeating Springfield sophomore Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) and junior Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.). The Blue took a 2-0 lead just minutes later when sophomore Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) and first year Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) bested junior Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Addie Kendall (Lakeville, Mass.), 8-1.

Wellesley would go on to close out doubles thanks to another 8-1 final, this time from first years Lizzy Kong (Mason, Ohio) and Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) over sophomore Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) and senior Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.) at No. 3. After earning a win in doubles, Chu ran the Wellesley advantage to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ahlmeyer. Hernandez ended the match by decision with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kendall at No. 4.

Tuesday's match-up between Wellesley and Babson will be the fourth straight NEWMAC semifinal meeting between the two local rivals. Wellesley earned the victory last season after falling to Babson in the two years prior.
