Blue Tennis Defeats Bryn Mawr, Vassar To Win Final Seven Sisters Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Wellesley College tennis swept all of the competition at the 2019 Seven Sisters Championship to claim the last ever Seven Sisters title on Sunday at Vassar's Walker Field House.

After a perfect 2-0 day one of play, the Blue (4-0 overall) continued their winning ways with a pair of 4-1 wins over Bryn Mawr and the host Brewers to clinch the program's 14th and final Seven Sisters title and the first for the Blue since 2014.

The sophomore pair of Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill) teamed up in the first doubles match-up to defeat Bryn Mawr's top squad for Wellesley's first win of the day,6-0, 6-0. Senior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) picked up the second win for Wellesley as she defeated sophomore Christina Xue (Eddison, N.J.) by a final score of, 6-1, 6-1.

The Blue clinched the victory in the third singles match-up when junior Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) beat junior Caroline Horvatits (Buffalo, N.Y.), 6-3, 6-1. With the match secured, senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) added another Wellesley point with a first singles tiebreaker victory over Bryn Mawr's first year Parrish (Queens Village, N.Y.), 7-6, 6-7, 10-4. Bryn Mawr tallied their only point in the match in the second singles match-up when Owls first year Audrey Camacho (Wayland, Mass) defeated Wellesley's first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) in a tiebreaker, 7-6, 7-6.

In the de facto championship match, Wellesley jumped out to a 1-0 lead when first year Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea) and Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) defeated Vassar's Cara Kizilbash (Pensacola, Fla.) and Vista Grinde (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the 2nd doubles match-up by a score of, 6-4, 6-3. The Blue built upon that lead and pushed it to 2-0 when first year Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) brought home a hard-fought win, 6-4, 3-6, 12-10, in the third singles match over Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, Calif.). Vassar battled back to earn a point in the first doubles match with senior Morgane Flournoy (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and junior Tara Edwards (Littleton, Colo.) beating out Wellesley first year Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) and junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) in a third set tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6, 10-3.

Needing just one win to clinch the Seven Sisters title, first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) came through for her team and defeated sophomore Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, Nev.) by a final of 6-3, 6-4. While the championship was already won, the action was not over, as senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) battled Vassar's Frances Cornwall (Poway, Calif.) in a back-and-forth tiebreaker and came out victorious, 3-6, 7-6, 10-8, to clinch the 4-1 final.

The Blue return to the court on Saturday, March 9th when they travel to New York University.
