Wellesley Tennis Drops Road Contest to No. 22 TCNJ, 7-2

EWING, N.J. -- No. 38 Wellesley College tennis dropped their second consecutive match to a ranked opponent, as No. 22 The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) defeated the Blue, 7-2, in a non-conference match-up on Sunday afternoon at the TCNJ Rec Center. 

Wellesley drops to 4-2 on the spring season. TCNJ remains perfect at 12-0, including 5-0 in their spring schedule.

Wellesley picked up a win in the first match of the day in first doubles with senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) defeating TCNJ's first year pair of Liya Davidor (Leonia, N.J.) and Katrine Luddy (Ridgewood, N.J.) by a final score of 8-3. The Lions bounced back to even the match at 1-1 with a win in the third doubles match and did not look back.

Another pair of first years for TCNJ, Sarah Phung (Egg Harbor Twp, N.J) and Navya Yemula (Basking Ridge, N.J.), defeated Blue senior Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas) and first year Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas), 8-6 at No. 3. TCNJ took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as senior Grace Minassian (Closter, N.J.) and senior Alyssa Baldi (Mahwah, N.J.) defeated Wellesley's first years Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) and Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) by a final score of 8-6 in second doubles.

The Lions took a commanding 3-1 lead over Wellesley after the fourth singles match as Selina Peng fell to TCNJ's Alyssa Baldi by a final of 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. At No. 3, Shen pushed the Luddy to three sets, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. TCNJ clinched the match when Davidor beat Huang in the first singles match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Markwart was outmatched by Minassian in the second singles slot, as Minassian defeated Martwart, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, to help TCNJ extended their lead to 6-1. The Blue were unable to secure a point in sixth singles, as senior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) fell to first year Julia Yoon (Ridgewood, N.J.), 6-1, 6-1. Chang salvaged a point in the last match of the day for Wellesley, defeating Yemula in the fifth singles match, 6-1, 7-5.

The Blue will open up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on the road against Wheaton College on March 19th for a match set to begin at 4:00 PM. TCNJ returns to action at home on March 16th against No. 20 New York University at 10:00 AM.
