Wellesley Tennis Opens NEWMAC Season With 8-1 Win Over Wheaton

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis opened the 2019 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season with an 8-1 victory over Wheaton College on Tuesday evening at Beard Field House. 

The Blue, ranked No. 39 in the most recent ITA/Division III National Poll, snapped a two match skid with the win and are now 5-2 (1-0 NEWMAC) to open the season. Wheaton is now 1-4 (0-1 NEWMAC) on the year.

The Blue swept through doubles to take command of the match. At No. 1, senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) defeated Wheaton senior Ines De Bracamonte (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.) and junior Isabelle Garvanne (Los Angeles, Calif.), 8-1.

First years Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass) and Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) followed with an 8-3 win over first year Miriam Glindo Cerrada (Madrid, Spain) and senior Connor O'Keefe (Lutz, Fla.) at No. 2. At No. 3, First years Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) and Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea) closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory over sophomore Allison Burton (Hingham, Mass.) and Harley Swainston (Hudsonville, Mich.).

Leading 3-0, the Blue dropped the top singles match to open singles play, as De Bracamonte defeated Markwart, 6-1, 6-3. However, the Blue rallied to sweep the remaining matches, jumping from a 3-1 lead to an 8-1 victory. Huang made the score 4-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Garvanne at No. 2. Chang secured the match with a victory at No. 5, defeating Burton, 6-4, 6-3.

Shen made the score 6-1 Wellesley with a 7-5, 6-2 win over O'Keefe at No. 4. Peng battled through a second set tiebreaker to defeat Cerrada, 6-3, 7-6 (3), at No. 3, before junior Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) capped the match with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Swainston in the No. 6 spot.

Wellesley returns to action on Friday, March 22, with a 9:30 AM match versus No. 28 Denison at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla. Wheaton will travel to Brandeis on Saturday, March 23, for a 2:00 PM match.
