Wellesley Tennis Drops Florida Spring Break Opener to Denison, 9-0

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Wellesley College tennis opened up their spring break trip with a 9-0 loss to No. 28 Denison on Friday morning at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

With the setback, the No. 39 ranked Blue drop to 5-3 overall, while the Big Red wrap up their spring break trip with a win to improve to 6-4.

Denison jumped out to an early lead, sweeping all three of the doubles matches to take a commanding lead over Wellesley. The senior duo of Lauren Hawley (Dayton, Ohio.) and Emma Alsup (Nashville, Tenn.) defeat Blue's senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) in the 1st doubles slot, 8-1.

In the second doubles match, first years Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) dropped an 8-3 final to Big Red sophomores Alex Cash (New Albany, Ohio.) and sophomore Hannah Cianciola (Canfield, Ohio.). Denison finished off the doubles sweep with seniors Ashley Hammons (Louisville, Ky.) and Megan Hickey (Western Spring, Ill) defeating first years Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) and Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea), 8-5.

Cianciola took the win in the 4th singles match to kick off the singles slate with a 6-0, 6-2, Denison win over Shen. After defeating the Blue in doubles, Hawley and Alsup took to the singles court in the 1st and 2nd slots, respectively, and the result did not change, as the Big Red clinched the match. Hawley took down Huang, 6-2, 6-2, and Alsup defeated Markwart, 6-1, 6-2. Wrapping up play, Denison finished off the sweep with wins in the 3rd, 5th and 6th singles slots. Cash defeated Peng, 6-3, 6-3, at No.3. Hickey downed Chang, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and sophomore Madeline Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished off the win with a 7-6, 7-6, win over Wellesley junior Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) at No. 6.

Wellesley returns to the USTA National Campus for a match against Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Monday, March 25, scheduled to begin at 5:30PM. Denison will travel to Kenyon College for their next match on March 26.
