Blue Tennis Caps Spring Break Trip with 9-0 Victory over Pacific (Ore.)

ORLANDO, Fla -- Wellesley College tennis finished off their spring break trip to the USTA National Campus with a commanding 9-0 win over Pacific (Ore.) University on Tuesday morning.

With the non-conference win, the No. 39 ranked Blue improve to 7-3 overall, while the Boxers drop to 3-9 on the year. Wellesley was 2-1 overall on the team's spring break trip. 

Wellesley got off to a strong start in the doubles side of the match, going a perfect 3-0 before heading into singles play. The Blue picked up their first point when senior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) and junior Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.) defeated Pacific's pair of first years Adrienne Powell (Roseburg, Ore.) and Jessica Eligio (O'ahu, Hawaii), 8-4, in the No. 3 doubles match. Senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) took down the Boxer senior duo of Marissa Hayashi (Hilo, Hawaii) and Chantelle Baclay (Lahaina, Hawaii) in No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and first year Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) wrapped up the doubles sweep with a 6-8 win over junior Johanna Wilson (The Dalles, Ore.) and first year Halie Chang (O'ahu, Hawaii).

The Blue carried the momentum into singles play as each member of Wellesley took a 1-0 set lead in their respective singles match. Peng was the first to close the deal as she downed Powell to put Wellesley a point away from clinching the match. First year Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) clinched the Wellesley victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win in 4th singles over Wilson. Huang and Chang took care of business in their singles matches to secure the 9-0 victory as they defeated their opponents, 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.

Pacific will head back to the west coast and open up Northwest Conference play at Linfield on April 6th at 11:00AM. The Blue will continue New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a home match against Smith on Saturday, March 30, at 11:00AM.
