Wellesley Tennis Defeats Springfield to Remain Unbeaten in NEWMAC Play

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis kept pace at the top of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) standings with a 9-0 victory over Springfield College on Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. 

With the victory, the Blue are now 10-5 overall and 4-0 in NEWMAC play. Springfield moves to 9-4 on the season and is now 2-3 in conference matches.

The Blue cruised through doubles, winning the No. 1 and No. 2 matches by 8-1 scores.  First year Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) and junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) earned the win at No. 1, defeating senior Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and first year Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.). Senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) defeated junior Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) and first year Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) at No. 2.

An 8-3 win by Wellesley senior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) and sophomore Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.) over Springfield senior Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and junior Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) at No. 3 completed the doubles sweep. The Blue went on to sweep singles play and the match.

Huang downed Parrish, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1, while Peng outlasted Freadman, 7-5, 7-6 (3) at No. 2. Wins by Markwart at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2 over Etter), senior Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas), 7-5, 6-1, at No. 5, first year Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) No. 4 (6-2, 6-3) and first year Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea) at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0) closed out the Blue victory.

Wellesley will host MIT (4-0 NEWMAC) tomorrow, April 14, at 11:00 AM in a key NEWMAC match. The Pride return to the courts Tuesday, April 16, to host Emerson at 4:00 PM.
