Wellesley Tennis Drops Non-Conference Finale at Tufts, 7-2

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis picked up victories at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles but it wasn't enough to earn a team victory, as the Blue dropped a 7-2 non-conference final to Tufts University on Friday at the Voute Courts.

Tufts, the No. 8 team in the latest ITA/Division III National Poll, improved to 7-6 on the year with the win. The Blue are now 10-8 overall.

Following a Tufts victory at No. 3 doubles to open the match, Wellesley junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and first year Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) defeated first years Maggie Dorr (Concord, Mass.) and Caroline Garrido (Gastonia, N.C.), 8-5 at No. 1, to even the match. The Jumbos would ultimately take a 2-1 lead into singles play, following an 8-4 win at No. 2 by seniors Tomo Iwasaki (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Otilia Popa (San Diego, Calif.) over Wellesley senior Justine Huang (Coro de Caza, Calif.) and first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.).

Huang picked-up the only Blue victory in singles play, outlasting Door in three sets. Huang dropped the first set 4-6, but tied her match with a 6-2 win in the second set. The two played a back-and-forth third set super-breaker where Huang took the final advantage with a 12-10 win. The Jumbos swept the remaining matched in two sets. Markwart stretched Iqasaki to tiebreaker in her second set, but dropped a 7-1 final to fall, 6-2, 7-6.

Wellesley returns home and to New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, April 20, at 12:00 PM versus Mount Holyoke. Tufts will play tomorrow at home versus Conn. College. at 10:00 AM.
