Wellesley Tennis Celebrates Senior Day With 8-1 Win Over Mount Holyoke

WELLESLEY, Mass -- Wellesley College tennis celebrated Senior Day with an 8-1 overSeven Sisters rival Mount Holyoke in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

With the victory, the Blue are now 11-8 overall and 5-2 in conference with one NEWMAC match remaining on the schedule. Mount Holyoke drops to 10-9 with the setback and is now 3-4 in NEWMAC play.

Prior to the match the Blue recognized seniors Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) and Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas). Justine Huang and first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) then teamed up to win the first Blue point of the match in No. 2 doubles, defeating Mount Holyoke junior Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.) and first year Annissa Aamoun (Dulles, Va.), 8-2. 6. Ki dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 8-10 final to Mount Holyoke first year Hannah Middleton (Stonington, Conn.) at No. 6 singles.

The Blue would take a 3-0 lead into singles, as the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams followed Huang and Markwart's win with victories. Sophomore Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and first year Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) took down senior Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M.) and Middleton, 8-4 at No. 3. Junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and first year Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) defeated Mount Holyoke senior Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan) and junior Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan), 8-4, in the No. 1 slot to complete the doubles sweep.

Justine Huang opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Yazawa at No. 1, before the Blue clinched the match behind a 6-3, 6-4 win from Peng over Ching-Ching Huang at No. 2. Wins from Markwart, 6-3, 6-4, over Peabody at No. 3, and Chang, 6-1, 7-5, over sophomore Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.) at No. 4, combined with a 6-7, 6-4, 11-9, victory from junior Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) over Aamoun at No. 5 closed out the 8-1 win for the Blue.

Both squads wrap up their regular season with a NEWMAC matchup on April 23rd, with the Blue hosting Emerson at 4:30PM, while the Lyons host Smith at 4:30PM.
