Wellesley Tennis Sweeps Emerson to End NEWMAC Regular Season

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College tennis closed out the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season with a 9-0 sweep of visiting Emerson College on Tuesday evening at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Blue are now 12-8 overall and 6-2 NEWMAC and will host a quarterfinal match-up when the NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championships tournament begins on Saturday, April 27. Emerson ends the season with an 11-8 mark and a 2-6 NEWMAC record.

The Blue rolled through doubles play, taking a 3-0 lead into singles. Wellesley cruised to wins at No. 1 and No. 3, with junior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and first year Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) defeating juniors Alisha Parikh (San Francisco, Calif.) and Sabrina Jacobs (Demarest, N.J.), 8-1, in the top pairing and junior Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) and first year Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea) sweeping past sophomore Cassia Burns (Tewksbury, Mass.) and first year Thea Nagle (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) at No. 3.  

An 8-3 win for first year Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) over first years Annie Woodbury (Salinas, Calif.) and Eliana Flores-Barber (Long Beach, Calif.) at No. 2 closed out doubles play. The Blue would go on to sweep the remaining matches to secure the 9-0 win.  

First year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) got the ball rolling in singles, defeating Parikh, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1. A victory from Shen (6-3, 6-0) over Jacobs at No. 2 clinched the match, before Chu closed out a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Woodbury at No. 3. Sophomore Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.) picked-up a 6-1, 6-1, win versus junior Sarah Skeeles (Hamden, Conn.) at No. 6 and Hernandez downed Flores-Barber, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4. Wellesley senior Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) closed out the win with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Nagle at No. 5.
