Wellesley's Chu, Huang, Markwart Earn NEWMAC Tennis All-Conference Honors
WESTWOOD, Mass. -- The New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced the 2019 Women's Tennis All-Conference and Postseason awards on Wednesday and Wellesley College senior Justine Huang (Coto de Caza. Calif.), sophomore Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and first year Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) have each earned All-Conference Second Team Honors. Chu was selected at No. 6 singles, while Huang and Markwart were named All-Conference at No. 2 doubles.
Lily Chu | So. | Princeton, N.J. | NEWMAC Second Team All-Conference - No. 6 Singles
Chu was selected as Second Team All-Conference at No. 6 singles for the second time in as many seasons. Chu was 6-3 overall in singles during the 2018-19 season, while posting a 3-1 record in conference at the No. 6 singles position in the Wellesley lineup, including victories over opponents from Babson, Smith, and Emerson. Earlier this season, Chu was selected as NEWMAC Doubles Athlete of the Week along with teammate Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea) when the Blue claimed the Seven Sisters title.
Justine Huang (Sr. | Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Michaela Markwart (Fy. | Hanover, Mass.) | NEWMAC Second Team All-Conference - No. 2 Doubles
Huang caps a standout career with a fourth selection to the NEWMAC All-Conference team and her third overall selection in doubles. For Markwart, the honor is the first of her career following an outstanding rookie season. The duo combined to post a 7-5 overall record and a 4-1 mark in conference matches. Huang and Markwart first teamed together for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles versus non-conference Wis.-Oshkosh on March 25. They went on to earn NEWMAC wins versus Smith, Springfield, MIT, and Mount Holyoke during the regular season.
The NEWMAC Women's Tennis All-Conference Team includes nine first team and second team selections of singles and doubles teams, which are voted on by the nine women's tennis coaches. The NEWMAC also recognized the nine women's tennis student-athletes that were named to the All-Sportsmanship Team. The award is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season. Sophomore Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.) was this year's selection for the Blue.
