Blue Tennis Completes NEWITT Tournament With Winner in the C Draw

Wellesley tennis concluded the NEWITT Tournament over the weekend with action in four different draws (A, B, C, and D). The Blue had a pair win the C draw, a second place finish in the backend of the B side, and two winners in the D draw.

#1 seeded Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea) won two matches on Saturday to advance to the final four in the C bracket. The other Blue team in the C draw was Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) who won on Friday to advance. Alviar and DeAgazio defeated an Endicott team to work their way to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Aviar and DeAgazio powered through to defeat Audrey Soohoo (Alameda, Calif.) and Chanhtel Thongphok (Gaithersburg, Md.) of Skidmore and move on to the championship. Shen and Lee however, suffered a defeat in their semifinal match to Ashley Walker (New Cannan, Conn.) and Blair Hollyday (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) of Trinity College. With the championship set on Sunday, Alviar and DeAgazio avenged their teammates and defeated the Trinity duo to win the C draw. The pair of sophomores finished 3-0 for the weekend to earn the C bracket victory.

On the B side, Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) suffered a tough loss on Friday, but bounced back in the consolation bracket. The squad won on Saturday in the second round over a Nichols pair. Chang and Markwart then took on Juliana Herrera (Villavicencio, Colombia) and Ramida Manataweewat (Bangkok, Thailand) of Springfield College in the semifinals. The Wellesley pair kept the momentum going and advanced to the championship round. However, a Trinity College team of Josephine Kimball (New York, N.Y.) and Ella Baker (Gladstone, N.J.) got the best of the Blue who settled for second place.

After advancing on Friday, Ashleigh Parlman (Acton, Mass.) and Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) were beaten in the second round to Sasha Gaeth (Seattle, Wash.) and Kriti Williams (Braintree, Mass.) of Wesleyan in the A draw.

The Blue also found success in the D flight, Elicia Lee (Seoul, South Korea) and Hannah Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) winning their pool. Junior Celeste Tran (Los Altos, Calif.) was paired with senior Nikki Cheng (Honolulu, Hawaii) as the unorthodox team won their pool over the weekend.

Blue Tennis will return to action in 2022 for the spring season.
