Narvarez Breaks School Record in 400m as Blue Track & Field Competes at Aloha Relays

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Wellesley College sophomore Isabella Narvaez won the 400 meter dash with a school record time of 57.38 on Saturday afternoon at the Aloha Relays, hosted by Bowdoin College. Narvarez's time breaks the previous mark of 58.47 set by Leah Clement in 2011.

Wellesley finished in fifth place in the team competition with 61 points. Host Bowdoin (145) took home the title in a field that also included Bates, Colby, Husson, Mount Holyoke, St. Joseph's, and the University of Southern Maine.

Narvaez then joined seniors Kathleen Hanlon and Kendra Waters and first year Abena Asare in the 4 x 100m relay, where the Blue took second place in the event with a time of 49.37. The sub-50.0 second time was the first ever for a Wellesley 4 x 100m relay team in competition.

Asare later went on to win the long jump competition with a mark of 5.18m.

Junior Sharon Ng also added her name to the lost of Blue winners on the day, earning another first place finish in 800 meter run with a time of 2:18.27. Ng, Narvaez, Waters, Hanlon also earned runner-up honors in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 4:01.43. 

The Blue added eight top-ten finishes in the five other events, including a third place time in the 4 x 800m relay when sophomore Sonja Cwik, junior Alessandra Gavin, and first years Taylor Fortnam and Isabella King turned in a time of 10:47.42. Cwik also finished ninth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:01.23.

In the 5000 meter run, the Blue's Carolyn Chelius finished fifth in 18:51.89, while sophomore Alice Zhou took seventh (19:00.54) and classmate Sara Vannah (19:12.51) grabbed eighth. 

In the 1000 meter hurdles sophomore Susannah Perkins earned seventh with a mark of 17.87, while first year Priscilla Lee finished in the top-five in the high jump at 1.48m and sophomore Emma Scalisi finished sixth in the triple jump at 9.98m. 

Wellesley track & field will now prepare for the 2015 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships next Saturday, April 25th, at MIT. Full information on the Championship, including directions, can be found at newmacsports.com
