Wellesley’s Asare Competes At NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships

WAVERLY, Iowa – Wellesley College track & field sophomore Abena Asare (Berlin, N.J.) made her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday afternoon, competing in the women's long jump at Wartburg College's Walston Hoover Stadium.

Asare recorded a jump of 5.30m in her final attempt in flight one of the women's long jump but did not qualify for Thursday's final. 

The Wellesley sophomore was making the third NCAA Championship appearance of her career after also competing at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships this winter. Asare garnered All-American recognition at the NCAA Indoor Championships, taking fourth with a leap of 5.77m. With her performance, she became the first field athlete in Blue program history to earn All-American honors.

The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Champion in the long jump in both 2015 and 2016, Asare qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a leap of 5.73m at the 2016 NEWMAC Championships. Asare is also the school record holder in the indoor (5.77m) and outdoor (5.79) long jump.

The 2016 NCAA Track & Field Championships continue for Wellesley track & field on Saturday when junior Mary Kennan (Boerne, Texas) runs in the 5000m at 5:25 PM Eastern.  Live video is available at ncaa.com.
