Blue Track & Field Gets Indoor Season Underway at Smith Winter Classic

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Wellesley College track & field opened the 2016-17 indoor season on Saturday, competing at the Smith College Winter Classic at the Pioneers' Track & Tennis Center. 

First year Hannah Cohn (Chicago, Ill.) led the way for the Blue, earning a first place finish in the 60m Dash, a second place finish in the 200m Dash and an eighth place time in the 400m Dash. Cohn advanced to the 60m final with a time of 8.11 seconds, before winning the event in 8.02. 

Cohn finished the 200m Dash in 26.47, just ahead of Wellesley senior Isabella Narvaez (Cali, Colombia), who clocked in at 26.52. The duo then combined to earn Wellesley a pair of top-ten times in the 400m Dash, as Narvaez took third in 59.93 and Cohn was eighth in 1.03.20. 

Competition got underway with field events on Saturday, with the Blue competing in the Weight Throw, Shot Put, High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump. Sophomore Helen Andersen (Madison, N.J.) finished in the top-five in both the weight throw and the shot put, starting her day with a toss of 11.49m in the weight throw, before sending the shot put 10.04m. First year JoAnn Jung (River Edge, N.J.) also added top-ten performances in the weight throw (10.31m) and shot put (9.84m), while classmate Crystalina Guo (Montgomery, N.J.) was eighth in the shot with a mark of 9.84m. 

Senior Emma Scalisi (Waltham, Mass.) had the top mark for the Blue in long jump, leaping to a distance of 4.52m to take eighth. Scalisi also finished sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 9.93m. Sophomore Josephine Kim (Newport Coast, Calif.) added an eighth place finish in the high jump (1.43m) to close out Wellesley's day in the field events. 

The Blue added another top-five finish on the track thanks to Edie Sharon (Winchester, Mass.), as the senior built on her All-Region performance at the conclusion of the cross country season with a time of 10:45.86 in the 3,000m Run on the opening day of the track and field season. First years Elizabeth Lambert (Kensington, Md.) and Fiona Harrigian (San Marino, Calif.) added times of 11:30.23 and 12:05.47, respectively, in the 3,000m.

Also in action on Saturday, sophomore Jenn Harris (Vestal, N.Y.) and first year Hannah Knoll (Boise, Idaho) recorded times of 10.80 and 10.90 in the 60m Hurdles. The duo also competed in the 200m Dash, with Harris finishing in 30.73 and Knoll in 31.61. Harris also completed the 600m Run in 1:50.84. 

Wellesley will continue the season in 2017 at the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University. The meet will take place on Saturday, January 14, at 11:00 AM.
