Blue Track & Field Racks Up 10 Top-Five Finishes at Smith Pioneer Invite

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Senior Isabella Narvaez (Cali, Colombia) took first place in the 200m and the 400m and first year Hannah Cohn (Chicago, Ill.) added a first place finish in the 60m to lead Wellesley College track & field to ten top-five finishes at the 2017 Smith College Pioneer Invitational. Wellesley finished in fourth place (80 points) as a team at the event.

Sophomore Helen Andersen (Madison, N.J.) set a new school mark in the weight throw, registering a toss of 11.72m just a week after she set a new school mark in the shot put. Andersen finished sixth in the shot put (9.58m). First year Crystalina Guo (Montgomery, N.J.) was the top Wellesley finisher in the shot put on Saturday, taking sixth (10.24m). Guo was also eighth in the weight throw (10.41m).

Narvaez and Cohn took two of the top three spots in the 200m, with Narvaez clocking in at 26.80 to lead the field and Cohn registering a time of 27.39 for a third place finish. In the 400m, Narvaez was the only competitor in the field to finish the race in under a minute, recording a time of 59.69. Narvaez earned a spot in the 200m and the 400m at the New England Division III Indoor Championships with her times, while Cohn's time in the 60m also qualified her for NE DIII's.

First year Eva Paradiso (Burlington, Vt.) and senior Sonja Cwik (La Canada, Calif.) also clocked NE DIII qualifying times on Saturday. Paradiso was the runner-up in the 1000m, earning the first of two top-ten times for the Blue in the event with a mark of 3:07.58. Junior Isabella King (Cincinnati, Ohio) took tenth in the 1000m in 3:20.38, while classmate Taylor Fortnam (Portola Valley, Calif.) was 11th (3:20.41). Cwik was third in the Mile with a career best time of 5:14.11, finishing less than two seconds behind first in the lead pack. First year Fiona Harrigian (San Marino, Calif.) added a 14th place time (5:51.98) in the field of 22. Cwik, Fortnam, King and Paradiso would later combine to snag the Blue a runner-up finish in the 4 x 800m Relay with a time of 10.16.82.

Sophomore Jenn Harris (Vestal, N.Y.) and senior Emma Scalisi (Waltham, Mass.) added the final two top-five finishes for the Blue. Harris was fourth in the 500m with a time of 1:30.89. She also earned a 13th place finish in the prelims of the 60m Hurdles (10.78). Scalisi took fourth in the Triple Jump (10.14m), while also competing in the Long Jump and earning a 16th place finish (4.12m). Junior Priscilla Lee (Anaheim, Calif.) had the top mark for the Blue in the Long Jump, taking 13th (4.34m).

Wellesley will compete in a pair of meets next weekend, with some members of the team taking part in Boston University's John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday, January 27, while others head to the Tufts Stampede in Medford on Friday and on Saturday, January 28.
