Wellesley Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at Smith Winter Classic

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Fiona Harrigian (San Marino, Calif.) was the runner-up in the 3000m and senior Isabella King (Cincinnati, Ohio) took third place with a New England Division III Championship qualifying mark in the 5000m to lead Wellesley College track & field in their indoor season opener on Saturday at the Smith College Winter Classic.

Harrigian finished in 11:53.60 in the 3000m, while King carried her momentum from a successful cross country season onto the track and recorded a time of 18:35.95 in the 3000m. In the high jump, senior Priscilla Lee (Anaheim, Calif.) also recorded a top-three finish, clearing a personal record distance of 1.50m to take third. Lee had a busy day on the track as well, finishing 19th in the 60m (8.75m) and 10th in the 200m (28.79).

First year Rachel Berets (Belmont, Mass.) ran alongside Lee in the 200m, taking 19th in 30.40 seconds, but she added a sixth place time in the 60m Hurdles, finishing in 10.04. Berets was joined in the 200m by three other Wellesley first years, with Tatenda Rameau (Syracuse, N.Y.) leading the way with an eighth place (28.58) finish. First year Hana Sugioka (Newbury Park, Calif.) was 15th (29.26) and classmate Aiyana Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was 21st (30.79). Rameau also had the top time for Wellesley in the 60m dash, taking 15th in 8.58 seconds.

First year Anicia Gillespie (Boston, Mass.) was Wellesley's only participant in the 400m, taking sixth in 1:05.41. Also in action on the track, first year Hana Sugioka (Newbury Park, Calif.) was 12th in the 60m Hurdle prelims.

Sophomore Crystalina Guo (Montgomery, N.J.) led the way for Wellesley in both the shot put and the weight throw. Guo took sixth in the shot (10.02m) and was ninth in the weight throw (10.17m). First year Shanez'e Johnson (Worcester, Mass.) added a distance of 8.96m (13th) in the weight throw, while senior Caroline Hsu (Boca Raton, Fla.) was 14th (8.88m).

Wellesley will compete again next Saturday, December 9, at 10:00 AM at the Rhode Island College Invitational.
