Blue Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at CNU's Blue & Silver Challenge

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore Tatenda Rameau (Syracuse, N.Y.) won both the long jump and 100m and classmate Taylor Mahlandt (Ephrata, Pa.) opened the outdoor season with a New England Division III Championship qualifying first place time in the 5000m to lead Wellesley College track & field at the Blue & Silver Challenge on Saturday at Christopher Newport University's Irwin Belk Track. 

Rameau leaped 5.08m on her second attempt to win the long jump. She also edged Lynchburg senior Lacey Elliott by three-tenths of a second to win the 100m, finishing in 13.05. Mahlandt led a group of four Wellesley finishers in the 5000m, taking first in 18:39.54. In addition to Mahlandt, first year Grace Cowles (Yarmouth, Maine) was sixth (20:16.42), sophomore Sophie Dolan (Austin, Texas) was seventh (20:51.76) and first year Carolyn Price (Koloa, Hawaii) took ninth (21:01.20).  

Senior Priscilla Lee (Anaheim, Calif.) followed Rameau in the 100m, earning a seventh place finish in 13.67 seconds. However, Lee's best result of the day came in the high jump where she cleared 1.50m to take second place. Junior Yuriko Fukumura (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Keer Sun (Pine Brook, N.J.), and first year Aiyana Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) joined Rameau and Lee in the 100, finishing 11th (14.76), 13th (14.85), and 14th (14.88), respectively. Smith was also Wellesley's top finisher in the 200m, finishing 16th in 30.23.

Competing in a pair of events, senior Isabella King (Cincinnati, Ohio) took third in the 1500m (4:55.34) and fourth in the javelin with a toss of 29.11m. King was also part of the Blue's 4x400m relay team, as Jenn Harris (Vestal, N.Y.), King, and senior Taylor Fortnam (Portola Valley, Calif.) and first Ava Shipman (Makawao, Hawaii) finished fifth in 4:31.90. Shipman also added a tenth place finish in the 800m (2:33.23) to round out her day.

Junior Cathy Chen (Parsippany, N.J.) finished in the top five in both the 100m and 400m Hurdles. Chen was fifth in the 100m, finishing with a time of 16.72 seconds – a nearly identical mark to first year Rachel Berets (Belmont, Mass.) who finished sixth in 16.73m. Chen was also third in the 400m Hurdles in 1:11.32, while Harris took seventh (1:16.30). 

Junior Helen Andersen (Madison, N.J.) and sophomore Crystalina Guo (Montgomery, N.J.) paced the Blue in the throws, with Andersen earning a seventh place finish in both the shot (10.28m) and the hammer (35.31m) and Guo taking ninth in the discuss (28.35m) and sixth in the hammer (35.46m). 

Wellesley continues the outdoor season on Saturday, April 7 at the U.S. Coast Guard Invitational.
