Wellesley Welcomes Althea Johnson To Track & Field, Sports Performance Staff (Nov 15, 2017)

Althea Johnson joins Wellesley as an Assistant Track and Field coach (Sprints/Jumps) and Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach in 2017-2018.

Johnson comes to Wellesley after a three-year stint as an assistant coach for the track and field program and an Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach at Phillips Academy Andover. During her time at Phillips Academy, the Big Blues made numerous appearances in the NEPSTA Division I Championships, with multiple student-athletes recording first place times in sprint events.

Prior to her time at Phillips, Johnson was the Head Track and Field coach at nearby Lesley University from 2012-2014. She joined Lesley following three years (2008-2011) as Assistant Track and Field coach at the University of Texas - El Paso. During her time at UTEP, she coached two NCAA semifinalists, six Conference USA champions in sprints and relays, and a 400 meter finalist at the NCAA championships.  

Johnson was a 12-time All-American and three time national runner-up in the 60m, 200m, and 400m, and a two-time national champion in the 4x400m at Abilene Christian University and McKendree University. She was also a member of the Jamaican Jr. National 4x100m relay team and a gold medalist at the CARIFTA Games and the CAC Jr. Championship. A member of the Mckendree University Athletic Hall of Fame, Johnson was inducted for her team’s National Championships in 1999 and 2000.  

Johnson is a certified USTFCCCA Strength and Conditioning Specialist as well as a certified USATF Level 1 Track and Field.
