Wellesley Volleyball Goes 2-1 at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Wellesley College volleyball team posted a 2-1 record competing at the 2014 Brandeis Invitational this weekend. The results set the Blue's season mark to 2-2.

Wellesley opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Rhode Island College on Friday, with set scores of 25-17, 25-10, and 25-16. On Saturday, Williams proved to be too much for the Blue, as the Ephs took the match in three, 25-13, 25-14, and 25-16. Wellesley then rebounded for a 3-0 sweep of host Brandeis, defeating the Judges, 25-22, 25-16, and 25-18.

Wellesley's Sydney Carfagno was named to the All-Tournament team following the event. The senior recorded a pair of double-doubles this weekend, and totaled 33 kills and 29 digs in three matches.

Against Rhode Island College, Wellesley hit at a .361 clip, which included just one hitting error in the first two sets. Carfagno, junior Courtney Lang and senior  Lindsey Menichella combined for 23 kills and just one error in the match. Individually, Lang had nine kills, Carfagno added eight with a .571 hitting percentage, and Menichella posted six, while hitting .667.

Elsewhere in the RIC match, sophomore Brooke Fieldman picked up five kills, while classmate Taylor Jais had a game-high of 12 digs. Sophomore Maddie Koh ran the five-one offense, dishing out 28 total assists.

Against Williams, Wellesley had a rough day offensively, hitting negative (-012.) as a team. Carfagno had a team-high 10 kills and added 13 digs to complete the double-double. Lang added seven kills and Fieldman picked up six, while Jais led the Blue with 16 digs. Koh recorded 23 assists in the match to round out the stat sheet.

Closing out the weekend against Brandeis, Wellesley rebounded for a 3-0 win. Carfagno led all players with 15 kills, while adding 11 digs for her second double-double of the tournament. Lang hit .500 in the match, recording eight kills on 16 swings without an error. Koh wrapped up the highlights with a season-high 34 assists.

Wellesley now heads to the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship. The two-day event is being hosted by Vassar College on September 13th and 14th. The Blue open with Mount Holyoke and Smith on day one, and will play Bryn Mawr and Vassar on day two.
