Volleyball Tops Regis (Mass.), Falls to Host Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. – Wellesley College volleyball split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon at Rivier University's Muldoon Gymnasium. In the Blue's opening match, the host Raiders earned a 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 14-25, 25-16) victory. Wellesley responded with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-18) sweep of Regis (Mass.) in their final match. The Blue now stand at 4-6 overall in 2015. 

Rivier 3, Wellesley 1 (25-17, 25-19, 14-25, 25-16)

First year Yasmine Reece (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had a game high 16 kills but Wellesley fell to Rivier, 3-1. Reece also led the Blue with a .423 hitting percentage, adding five kills and a pair of block assists. First year Samantha Hoang (Elk Grove, Calif.) added a team-high 14 digs, while junior Brooke Fieldman (Greenwood Village, Colo.) added nine kills and 12 digs. First year setter Michelle Li (Scarsdale, N.Y.) dished out a team-high 25 assists for the Blue. 

Rivier jumped to a 25-17 victory in the first set, putting down 10 kills as a team. The Raiders followed with a 13 kill performance in the second set, htting .370 en route to a 25-19 victory over the Blue. Wellesley countered in the third set, putting down a match-best 14 kills in the frame to earn a commanding 25-14 victory. However, the Blue were unable to carry that momentum into the next game and force a fifth a fifth set, as Rivier cruised to a 25-16 victory to take the 3-1 win. 

Wellesley 3, Regis (Mass.) 0

Reece again registered a team-high in kills in game two, putting down 9 to lead the Blue to a 3-0 sweep of Regis. Li and sophomore Maddie Koh (Seattle, Wash.) combined to lead the Blue offense with 31 assists. Sophomore Katie Yan (Cohoes, N.Y.), and first year Ashley Peng (San Diego, Calif.) added five kills each, while first year Samantha Ostenso (Hopkins, Minn.) chipped in with four. Yan and Hoang also tied with a team-high in digs, each adding 10. 

The Blue had little trouble in the second match, tallying double-digit kill totals in each set en route to straight set victories of 25-15, 25-16, 25-18.

Wellesley will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday night, September 22, when they travel to Wheaton for a 7:00 PM contest.
