Volleyball Sweeps Framingham St. Tri-Match To Cap 20-Win Regular Season

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Wellesley College volleyball secured the program's first 20-win season since 2013 with a sweep of a non-conference tri-match on Saturday at the Framingham State Athletic Center. The Blue earned 3-0 wins in both of their matches, defeating Westfield St., 25-5, 25-20, 25-16, and the host Rams, 25-15, 25-15, 25-11.

In the day's opening match the Rams secured the victory over Westfield St. by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-11. Wellesley is now 20-5 overall, while the Rams improved to 14-17 with the split and the Owls dropped to 12-15. 

Wellesley 3, Westfield St. 0 (25-5, 25-20, 25-16)  

Wellesley had little trouble in their opening match, racing to a 25-5 first set win before closing out the sweep with wins of 25-20 and 25-16. 15 different players saw action for the Blue in the match, with first year Lauren Gedney (Huntersville, N.C.) leading the way with eight kills and six aces.

Junior Ashley Peng (San Diego), Calif. added seven kills and 10 digs, while classmate Michelle Li added four kills, 24 assists, and four digs. First year Becca Aristotelidis (San Antonio, Texas) also had eight digs for the Blue. 

Junior Lizzie Taylor (Medfield, Mass.) had a match-high 21 digs in the setback for Westfield St. First year Ainsley MacLeod (Hampden, Mass.) finished with eight of the Owls' 19 kills, while senior Brigid Murray (Norfolk, Mass.) added 14 assists and three digs. 

Wellesley 3, Framingham St. 0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-11)

The Blue continued to cruise in their second match, defeating the Rams by scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-11.

Gedney hit .400 in the nightcap, adding 10 more kills, as Wellesley also got seven kills from junior Samantha Ostenso (Hopkins, Minn.) and five kills each from first years Darina Postupaka (Tinley Park, Ill.) and Nikki Jensen (Castro Valley, Calif.). Li chipped in with 22 more assists and five digs, while classmate while Samantha Hoang (Elk Gorve, Calif.) had a match-high 12 digs.

First year Grace Coy (Mendon, Mass.) finished with eight kills to lead Framingham St. Senior Vicki Anderson (Attleboro, Mass.) matched Hoang for match-high honors with 12 digs, while sophomore Deirdre Fay (Cornwall, NY) and first year Michaela Cronin (Hampden, Mass.) recorded three kills apiece. Fay also finished with seven digs and sophomore Alexandra Fish (Lincoln, RI) added eight. 

Wellesley will host Coast Guard in the quarterfinals of the 2017 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Tuesday, October 31, at 7:00 PM.
