Wellesley Volleyball Cruises to 3-0 Win at UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior Lauren Gedney (Huntersville, N.C.) and sophomore Nicole Doerges (San Marino, Calif.) combined for 26 kills to lead Wellesley College volleyball to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 26-24) non-conference victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Wednesday evening at the Tripp Center.
Gedney and Doerges each recorded 13 kills, while Doerges added eight digs and three service aces for the Blue (4-1 overall). Sophomore setter Izzy Seebold (Concord, N.C.) had 35 assists, eight digs, and a pair of aces. Classmate Lizzy Jessen (Burbank, Calif.) finished with a match-high 12 digs in two sets of action. Junior Molly Weik (Seattle, Wash.) also chipped in with eight kills as Wellesley finished with 43 as a squad.
Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) totaled four kills to lead UMass Dartmouth (0-4 overall) but errors plagued the Corsairs throughout the evening, as the hosts finished with just 19 kills and 20 errors on offense. UMD also received three kills each from junior Alivia Connors (Derry, N.H.), sophomore Mallory Singer (Succasunna, N.J.) and first year Emma Spach (Billerica, Mass.). First year Courtney Carreiro (Dartmouth, Mass.) chipped in with 10 set assists and a pair of service aces.
Wellesley never trailed in the opening set en route to a 25-19 first set victory. The Blue jumped to a 3-1 lead in the second game before UMD pushed back to overtake the Blue and jump to a 9-7 advantage. Trailing for the first time on the evening, the Blue scored five unanswered points to retake the set. The Blue would go on to post a commanding 25-15 victory to jump ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Blue fell behind again in the third set, trailing 11-6. Wellesley fought back into the match, as a kill from Weik made the score 12-11 UMD, but could not find a lead until late in the set when a Corsair error allowed Wellesley to jump ahead, 19-18. The teams battled to a 24-all tie as the hosts looked to extend the match to a fourth set. However, a kill from Doerges and a UMD error ended the match with a 26-24 Blue victory.
Wellesley will now look ahead to a 6:30 PM rematch with Bowdoin on the first day of the MIT Invitational on Friday evening in Cambridge, Mass. The Blue defeated the Polar Bears, 3-2, last Friday. UMass Dartmouth is also in action on Friday evening at 7:00 PM at Colby-Sawyer.
