No. 2 Wellesley Volleyball to Host No. 7 WPI to Begin NEWMAC Championship

WESTWOOD, Mass. - With the conclusion of a competitive regular season this afternoon, the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released the 2019 NEWMAC Volleyball Championship bracket on Saturday. Seven teams will be competing for the NEWMAC title with first round matches beginning on Tuesday, November 5th. Wellesley College (21-4, 9-1) secured the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 WPI (14-13, 4-6) on Tuesday, November 5, at 7:00 PM at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

The Blue earned a 3-2 comeback win at WPI earlier this season. Trailing 2-0 in the match, Wellesley won three striaght sets to down the Engineers. Tuesday's match-up will be the second consecutive NEWMAC quarterfinal match between the two teams. Wellesley earned a 3-0 sweep in last years's tournament.

In a head to head tie-break with the Blue, Babson (30-1, 9-1) emerged as the No. 1 seed, earning a first round bye and hosting duties in the semifinals. No. 3 MIT (24-6, 8-2) earned the No. 3 and will host a first round matchup. NEWMAC tie-breaking procedures were needed to break a three-way tie, as Wheaton (19-11, 6-4) earned the No. 4 seed, followed by Coast Guard (19-9, 6-4) as the No. 5 seed and Emerson (18-7, 6-4) as the No. 6 seed. Rounding out the field is No. 7 WPI. 

In the first round, the WPI Engineers will travel to the Blue, while the Lions will head across town to host MIT Engineers. The remaining first round matchup will have the Lyons hosting the Bears. On Thursday, November 7th, the winner of the No. 5 Coast Guard and No. 4 Wheaton matchup will take on No. 1 Babson, while the winner of No. 3 MIT and No. 6 Emerson will advance to play the winner of No. 2 Wellesley and No. 7 WPI.

The winners will then compete for the championship title on Saturday, November 9th.

Semifinals: Thursday, November 7th (at highest remaining seeds)

Winner No. 4/5 at No. 1 Babson – 7:00 p.m.

Winner No.3/No. 6 vs. Winner No. 2/7 – 7:00 p.m.

Championship: Saturday, November 9th (at highest remaining seed)

Semifinal Winners – 1:00 p.m.
