Wellesley Cross Country Finishes Seventh at Williams 6K Event

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Wellesley College cross country team finished seventh in a field of 24 teams at the 2014 Williams Purple Valley Classic on Saturday. The 6k event was held at Mount Greylock High School in Williamstown.

All of Wellesley's scoring runners finished in the top 30% of the 267-competitor field. The Blue, seeing the 6k distance for the first time this season, compiled a team score of 213. Wellesley ranked second amongst NEWMAC competition, behind only MIT, who won the event with 36 team points.

Individually, the Blue were led by Priyanka Fouda. The junior traversed the course in a time of 23:37.3 to finish 27th overall. Right behind Fouda were sophomore Mary Keenan in 34th place and senior Taylor Bickford in 36th place. Keenan ran a 23:45.1, while Bickford kept pace and finished in 23:48.5.

Rounding out the scoring runners for Wellesley were senior Nicole Chui and junior Sharon Ng. Chui finished 46th overall 24:07.9, while Ng ran a 25:01.7 to finish in 70th place.

A pair of sophomores served as Wellesley's sixth and seventh finishers, as Sara Vannah and Edie Sharon also turned in solid performances at the event. Vannah took 77th place and finished in 25:11.8. Sharon ran a 25:33.2 and finished in 82nd.

MIT's Sarah Quinn (22:23.9) and Maryann Gong (22:29.9) were the top overall finishers in the race, pacing the Engineers to the title. Middlebury finished second with 65 points, while Tufts was third with 95. 

Wellesley cross country returns to action at the New England Intercollegiate Championships. The event will take place on Saturday, October 11th at Boston's Franklin Park.
