Wellesley XC Runs to 4th at NEWMACs; Cowles Earns All-Conference Honors

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Grace Cowles earned All-Conference honors as Wellesley College cross country ran to fourth place at the 2018 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Saturday at Smith College. 

MIT (20 points) captured the 2018 NEWMAC crown, followed by runner-up WPI (71), third place Coast Guard (85) and the fourth place Blue (105). Host Smith (133) rounded out the top-five in the team standings, while Coast Guard's Kaitlin Mooney (Manahawkin, N.J.) was the overall winner and NEWMAC Runner of the Year with a time of 18:38. 

Cowles finished ninth overall to lead the Blue with a time of 19:49 in rain soaked conditions on Saturday. Cowles was followed by a pair of Blue first years, as Ariana Marks (Eagle Point, Ore.) took 18th (20:15) and Maya Bradbury (Freeport, Maine) finished 20th in 20:29. Sophomores Samara Shaz (New York, N.Y.) and Ava Shipman (Makawao, Hawaii) rounded out the Wellesley scoring runners in 27th (20:40) and 31st (20:50), respectively. Junior Taylor Mahlandt (Ephrata, Pa.) finished 34th in 20:54 and junior Keiko Hilmo (Saint Paul, Minn.) took 44th (21:12) to rounded out the top-seven for the Blue.
 
Wellesley will travel to Bowdoin College for the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional on Saturday, November 10, at 11:00 AM
