Some of my best memories of Wellesley athletics are of the time in between indoor and outdoor track. The weather fluctuates wildly, making it hard to know exactly what to wear on your run but there are also usually more sunny days than in winter. Our team can come together more than in indoor track, the sprinters and distance runners using the same area of the outdoor track and cheering each other on. Especially this year, some of my best workouts happen between indoor and outdoor track, probably fueled by the excitement of the outdoor track. Long runs that were freezing and only on streets become warmer and trails are accessible once again.
During my last long run at Wellesley, the other distance seniors and I combined many of our favorite runs to make a large loop. The sun was out and the run was a wonderful reminder of why I joined the cross country and track and field teams: to run and compete with my friends. This year in particular the time between indoor and outdoor was exciting because Keiko and I had just started training for javelin. Nothing made me happier than going to practice after class, running outside with my team, talking with my teammates, and then going to throws practice. While I had met all the throwers already, practicing with them and around them made me even more grateful to have them on the team. Throwing is so different in so many ways from running and it was refreshing to have new skills to learn. I will always be grateful to all of the throwers-Crystalina, Abby, Shania, Kiana, Emily, and our coach, Myles-for letting me join as a senior and allowing me to try something new.
While it was frustrating to hear the news that I would not be able to finish my outdoor season the way I wanted to, the larger disappointment was not being able to spend the time with my teammates. Now that we have a new track and beautiful throwing areas, I am excited to come back in the future to track and field meets at Wellesley.
