Wellesley Crew has given me the best friends and family I could have asked for. From my first (optional) run around the lake with Tessa and Duggan during orientation, I knew that I had chosen the right place to spend the next four years. Every 4:18 am wake up was worth it because it meant I got to row with some of the best people I’ve ever known.
Tessa Spillane shaped my college experience more than I’ll ever be able to tell her. She was everything I needed in a coach and more. She expected more from me than I thought I could give, but she was always right that I could go harder. She was always there, pushing me to be a better rower, a better teammate, and a better person. She taught me to hold myself to a higher standard and to chase dreams I thought were unlikely. She created a team culture which demonstrates the very best of Wellesley Athletics and Wellesley College. I am forever grateful for the almost four years I spent as one of her athletes.
I will always remember meditative long rows on the Charles and the thrill of racing our home course in front of thousands of spectators. While I’m heartbroken we didn’t have our final season, I know that the Red Hot Class of 2020 has left a legacy of hard work, love, and humor. I can’t wait to see what our teammates do with their next season.
