Wellness Wednesday #2: Self-Compassion

Wellness Wednesday #2: Self-Compassion

Wellness Wednesday is a 5-15 minute "activity" each Wednesday that is aimed at exercising the mind in relation to the behaviors of well-being and mental health. Each activity will include practice for you to do during the week.

Wellness Wednesday: Self-Compassion (April 1, 2020)

KEY POINTS:

  1. "LIFE GOES WRONG……. And that's OK"
  2. "HONOR AND RESPECT YOUR HUMANNESS"
  3. "UNLIKE SELF CRITICISM, WHICH ASKS IF YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH, SELF COMPASSION ASKS: WHAT IS GOOD FOR YOU!" -Dr. Kristin Neff

ACTIVITY:

  1. Watch/listen to the TED Talk: Getting Stuck in the Negatives (10 min)
  2. After watching the TED talk, read Self-Compassion Journal by Dr. Kristin Neff
  3. Bonus activity: if you have time, watch the Dove Real Beauty Sketches commercial (3 min)

"We live in a world where 'perfect' is the only way, and when we fail, which ultimately will happen because no one or one thing is perfect, we allow that failure to take over our mind," says said Niki Rybko, Wellesley's Director of Sports Medicine & Well-being. "We never listen to the advice we give others when they tell us about their 'failures,' instead we beat ourselves up and stay in the negative.

I challenge you to keep a self compassion journal for the week. Let's be present and mindful with ourselves, realize and accept we are human, and give ourselves the kindness we show others."
