Bio
Kathy Hagerstrom returned to Wellesley College as the Assistant Director of Operations, after spending 18 years as the head basketball coach.
With a career mark of 229-192, Hagerstrom retired as the winningest basketball coach in Wellesley College history. Drawing on her experience as a Division I student-athlete at the University of Nebraska, and nearly 25 years of collegiate coaching experience, Hagerstrom guided Wellesley to four postseason appearances, including the program’s first NCAA berth in 2000.
Hagerstrom was named NEWMAC Coach-of-the-Year on two occasions, 1999 and 2000. Also in 2000, she was named the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Coach-of-the-Year and ICON NCAA Division III District I Coach-of-the-Year. Additionally in 2000, Hagerstrom was one of eight finalists for ICON Division III National Coach-of-the-Year honors.
Under Hagerstrom’s tutelage, Wellesley student-athletes have succeeded in the classroom as well as on the court. Liza Janssen (’94) earned Kodak All-America honors as well as an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Most recently, Amy Barao (’01) was named Kodak All-America Honorable Mention while classmate Shani Delaney (’01) earned an NCAA Ethnic Minority Postgraduate Scholarship.
As a prep player, Hagerstrom was Wisconsin’s High School Player-of-the-Year and a Parade All-American. She earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising and broadcasting from the University of Nebraska, where she graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer. Hagerstrom also earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from Central Missouri State University. While at Central Missouri, she was an assistant coach with the team that won the 1984 Division II National Championship.
