Wellesley Field Hockey Shuts Out UMaine-Farmington, 1-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Junior goalkeeper Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) made nine saves and classmate Haley Chrobock (Branchville, N.J.) scored the game-winner, as Wellesley College field hockey picked up a 1-0 shutout victory in non-conference play against the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday at the Wellesley Fields Complex.

Wellesley is now 2-1 at home and during the 2017 campaign, while Farmington drops to 0-3 on the year. 

Chrobock scored the game's only goal at 7:43 of the first, as she finished on a crossing hit from classmate Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.). Negron raced down the right flank on the play, knocking the ball toward Chrobock and junior Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.), before Chrobock knocked it into the cage. Chrobock tallied her second goal of the year on the play and Negron picked-up her first assist of the season.

Wellesley finished the first half with an 11-8 advantage in shots but the contest remained 1-0. It was the same story in the second, where Wellesley outshot UMaine-Farmington, 12-4, but still could not find a second goal. The Blue ended the game with a 23-12 edge in shots, led by six each from Chrobock and Hwang. 

Connelly finished the game with nine saves, her most since an 11 save output in a setback to MIT in October of last season. The shutout was her first of the season and the third of her Wellesley career. UMaine-Farmington senior goalkeeper Alyssa Arsenault (Winthrop, Maine) made a career-high 11 saves on 12 Wellesley shots on goal in the game.

Wellesley will face the team's first road test of the year on Tuesday, September 12, when the Blue travel to Bridgewater St. for a 7:00 PM start. UMaine-Farmington will play at Southern Maine in their next contest on Wednesday, September 13, at 4:00 PM.
